The boy Seryozha Shcherbachov lives with his father, a former Red Army sapper, because when Seryozha was eight years old, his mother drowned while swimming in the Volga. To recover from grief, the father and son move to Moscow, where two years later the father marries Valentina Dolguntsova, and after a while the father is appointed director of a large textile store. And although now their family begins to live in luxury (by the standards of that time), this does not bring them happiness: Seryozha begins to notice that Valentina is clearly not too happy with his father, and the father himself seems to be constantly experiencing anxiety from a premonition of something bad. Two years later, on the day when 12-year-old Seryozha was appointed the main drummer of his pioneer detachment, his father was arrested and imprisoned for five years for embezzlement. Seryozha is experiencing hard separation from his father:Goodbye! - I thought about my father. - Now I am twelve, in five I will be seventeen, childhood will pass, and in our boyish years we will not meet again.The boy is very ashamed of the crime committed by his father, he believes that he has remained alienated, and now a void can form around him. This becomes the impetus for his moral downfall: Seryozha, having forgotten his pioneer past, begins to communicate with outright thief and hooliganism. Three years later, Valentina, who by that time had married again, left for the south, leaving 15-year-old Seryozha a large sum of money for food. But Seryozha, completely under the influence of new "friends", frivolously squanders everything. As a result, having no money even for a banal food, he is forced to sell his stepmother's valuables to a junk dealer. The teenager realizes that when Valentina returns, he will be in a bad way, and dreams that thieves will get into their apartment, on whom it will be possible to blame the loss of things. To do this, he regularly leaves the door of the apartment open.Once, returning to the apartment, Seryozha really discovers a stranger in it, who introduced himself as Valentina's brother. “Uncle” explains that Valentina never talked about him just out of absentmindedness. This man, a seemingly good-natured fat man, promises to help the teenager, and, having bought him several expensive gifts, wins his favor. After a while, he takes his nephew to Kiev.In Kiev, Seryozha for the first time begins to suspect that something was wrong: his uncle disappears for days on end, strange smells come from his room, and there is a strange paper in his desk, on which no traces of a pen remain. In response to an attempt at questioning, the uncle says that he is an unrecognized chemical scientist. Uncle's acquaintance Yakov, an ugly old man, is no less suspicious: he calls himself a Red Army hero, but in his habits he looks more like a hardened criminal. But a stupid teenager crushes doubts in himself: his uncle promised to take him to Odessa and arrange a cadet in a midshipman's school.Soon all three move again, staying in an old noble estate with a crazy old woman who is a caretaker. Apparently, she was once a lady who was saved by her uncle during the Civil War. Uncle introduces Seryozha to the boy Slavka, and gives his ward the task - to find out in detail about Slavka's father. In the course of conversations, Seryozha learns that the father of his new friend is a military engineer working at a secret enterprise. Seryozha, who still considers his uncle to be his friend and patron, gives the latter information that the engineer is going on a business trip tomorrow. Uncle and Yakov disappear for the whole day, and soon Slavka tells a friend that his father was robbed on the outskirts of the city, stabbing him in the back and taking a bag with secret documents. Having sent a request to Odessa by mail, Seryozha learns that there is no (and never was) a school of warrant officers in Odessa. He realizes with horror that his uncle is not an uncle at all, he never met Valentina, and used his "nephew" only as a cover. All the last days Seryozha lived side by side with murderers and spies.Fearing that he will be killed, Sergei steals a loaded pistol from his uncle. Then, however, he finds out that no one was going to kill him: having received the documents they need in their hands, the spies simply leave. The hero of the book, remembering his pioneer past, tries to stop them, but to no avail. Then he opens fire, killing Jacob on the spot. A return bullet fired by his uncle strikes the teenager in the throat, and he loses consciousness. Almost immediately the manor house was taken by storm by the state security officers, who had been following the German spy for a long time.Recovering from the operation, Seryozha learns that his father was released ahead of schedule for shock work. The father visits his son in the hospital, where the boy Slavka and other old acquaintances also come, ready to accept and forgive Seryozha and his father, despite their previous mistakes and misdeeds.
