Description: NICHOLAS BELVEAL was 22 when he enlisted as a Private on August 13, 1862 and was mustered into F Co. of the Iowa 33rd Infantry. He was mustered out on July 17, 1865. The 33rd fought at the Battle of Helena, the Engagement at Jenkins’ Ferry and participated in the Little Rock Campaign.2 pp, 7 ¾ x 9 ½, Belveal writes to his wife and parents from Helena, Ark, on April 19th, 1863, writing on “this clear Sabbath morning,” in part, that soldiers in the camp are in debt to the sutler. A Civil War sutler was a civilian who sold goods to soldiers in the field, in camp or at military posts. Sutlers were important because they provided supplies that the army didn’t have enough of or didn’t provide at all.“...I am cooking this week. We got our pay last Thursday and we sent it home with Capt. Forest...I want you to get whatever you need...The sutler takes the boy’s green back from them. Some of them was in debt more than they drawed when they drawed our state pay but I’ll tell you, they have never got a green back from me...“It rained about as hard last night as I have ever seen but I was reading my testament and I did not get wet...”Folds, toning. A little light but readable Belveal’s writing and punctuation are a little challenging. Unusual to find letters mentioning a sutler.Everything we sell is guaranteed authentic forever to the original buyer. We also offer a 30-day return policy.
