Description: Lucky Irish PennyUntil the monetary system was decimalized in 1969, Irish currency used more than a dozen different coin denominations, including multiples and fractions of farthings, pence, florins, shillings, and crowns. This coin is among the final issues of the old system. Its distinctive design features an Irish harp on the obverse and a “hen and chicks” motif on the reverse. The harp first appeared on coins of Henry VIII in 1534. After Irish independence, animal designs were used on coins to commemorate the rural character of the country. This penny design by Percy Metcalf was minted for 40 years from 1928 to 1968, essentially unchanged. It is known throughout the world as the Lucky Irish Penny.
