Artist's Biography: Jacob Mishori, visual artist, born 1952, Tel Aviv. Self-taught and Autodidactic artist. Lives and works in Tel Aviv.Jacob Mishori’s works represent a range of styles and techniques; from blunt expressiveness to refined geometry. He works in various techniques and mediums: aquarelles, oil works, acrylics, photographs and even a custom-made textile wall installation. Mishori’s early works deal with sexual identity mostly through the artist’s self-portrait, and are closely linked to the artifice of pop culture, rock & roll and glossy magazines. Since the 90s, his activity has evolved from self-portrait to the portrait of painting. The works range from sensual, warm and personal which may be perceived as expressive, to the geometrical which may be perceived as decorative or estranged. Two traditional approaches which the artist disputes and renders untraditional. The artist demonstrates a free-flowing process between styles and genres, breaking with traditions on the definition of beauty in art. Gallery, Tel Aviv, 1983 Jacob Mishori was born in Tel Aviv in 1952. A prominent Israeli painter, he is a self-taught, nonconformist, postmodernist artist, whose oeuvre has changed frequently over the years. His career evolved from an endless maze of varied techniques, great knowledge and conflicting emotions. Mishori is an autodidact who having previously taught at both the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem and the Midrasha College in Kfar Saba, now heads the Department for Fine Art at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. Mishori dropped out of school at the age of 15 in order to paint, supporting himself by working as a mover, an occupation that was his main source of livelihood until he was 40. He had the first of many one-person exhibitions at the age of 26, and his work has featured in numerous group exhibitions in Israel and abroad. He has won awards from the Ministry of Education and the Sharett Foundation. and his paintings are to be found in many private and museum collections. At the age of 44 he began teaching at the Bezalel Academy of Art and at Beit Berl college. He has also served as head of art department of the Avni Institute. He has written numerous articles and essays, dealing mainly with what he sees as the disastrous domination of the academic method, language and spirit over the teaching and the practice of art, and calling for a break between the academy and the making of art. After recently ceasing to paint, he wrote End, his first work of fiction. Mishori's painting and drawing practice can be described as self-reflective in the most extreme aesthetic. His work feeds on consistent and critical observations of his surroundings, and his tireless perusals of printed manifestations of common visual material (art books, fashion magazines, advertisements, catalogues, etc) which he uses to investigate, mock, reject, accept and obscure accepted visual language and cliches. His work almost compulsively references art history 'staples' such as Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, Cubism, Pop Art, Anti-Classicism, Modernism, Post-Modernism, etc. All of these re-workings of familiar terminologies highlight a restless discomfort in the act of viewing.Payment Methods: PayPal, Credit Card (Visa, Master Card), Bank Cheque.
