Jan Verhas' earliest works dealt with historical subjects and were executed in the Romantic style which was then in vogue in Belgian academic circles. After settling in Brussels and advised by good friend and painter, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Verhas’ focus shifted to a more Realist approach.In The Broken Flower Pot, the children are shown in a relaxed and natural manner which gives the scene a casual atmosphere. Behind the boy, an ornate gold planter looms behind him as a visual contrast of scale and material against what looks to be a marble or stone wall. The plants here remains more or less intact…perhaps too large and too tall for the children to topple over completely. But, on the floor is a broken flower pot successfully dislodged from its place.The viewer wonders if the children are indeed the culprits. The little boy seems somewhat defiant in his facial expression and stance while the girl looks to have resigned herself to having had something regretfully to do with the incident. The slight twisting of her foot and ankle is a nice, naturalistic touch.This painting is executed in a classical, realistic style of painting that allows for the rendering of various textural details of all the forms represented….from the foliage of the different plants to the luminous flesh of the children.
