Description: The Grand Antique Mall, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, presents a John Hill Company — JOHILLCO — boxed set #122 of lead soldiers in THE HIGHLAND BRIGADE. Total of 8 prone soldiers firing. Original box w/tie-in card. Uniform=Upper is red, bottom is plaid; white metal helmets; knee-high socks; black shoes, rifles. Johillco's THE HIGHLAND BRIGADE is featured in James Opie’s BRITAINS TOY SOLDIERS 1893-2013 (p.162), and in Andrew Rose’s TOY SOLDIERS 1850-PRESENT (p.108). According to Opie, “Immediately after the war, John Hill and Company was relocated to Burnley under new ownership. Perhaps the thought of issuing a rival set to one of Britains most recent newcomers would do well for them. They are certainly most colorful figures . . . and (today) they are even rarer than the Britains set.” Johillco was established in the UK in 1898 by John Hill with colleague George Wood, a former employee of Britains. Johillco closed its doors in 1960, having never fully recovered after the destruction of its factory in the London blitz. A fine set for collectors. NOTE: We carefully pack the pieces for shipping. Each is individually wrapped, first in tissue paper, then in bubble-wrap. Straws cover weapons, horse's legs and the like. QUESTIONS? Please send a message and we’ll promptly reply.
