L.”, 5 x 8, Feb. 16, 1862, on his personal “Acton Green Turnham Green, London” letterhead, by the English botanist, gardener, and orchidologist who worked, for a short time, as an assistant in Sir Joseph Banks herbarium and was appointed chair of botany at University College, London (1829-60). He wrote many scientific and popular works and botanical textbooks as well as making significant contributions to the Botanical Register, of which he was the editor for many years, and to the Gardeners’ Chronicle, where he was in charge of the horticultural department. The handwritten letter is part of a collection written to fellow botanist and taxonomist, Maxwell Tylden Masters(1833-1907), author of Vegetable Teratology and editor of the Gardeners’ Chronicle, in full: “My Dear Sir: Many thanks for your pamphlet, which is well done.
