Description: From the Preface: "The following study of the French influences on the development of John Stuart Mill's political and social philosophy was suggested by certain general remarks in Mill's Autobiography about his own development, and by the repeated emphasis he placed on the influence he felt of such French thinkers as the Saint-Simonians and Auguste Comte. Although the study was approached with the mere intention of determining what this influence might have been and of discovering, from a study of Mill's other works, whether any other French influences played a part in his developing thought, it soon became apparent that a major and unified problem underlay the whole of Mill's contact with French ideas and social movements and that, to a very large extent, the course of Mill's study of French thought paralleled his growing absorption with this problem in his own works. . ."
