Description: Khalil Gibran, The Prophet. Alfred A. Knopf Publisher, February 1971. 87th Printing. Hardcover book in dust jacket, not price clipped. 96 pages. The Prophet is a book of 26 prose poetry fables written in English by the Lebanese-American poet and writer Kahlil Gibran. It was originally published in 1923 by Alfred A. Knopf. It is Gibran's best known work. The Prophet has been translated into over 100 different languages, making it one of the most translated books in history, as well as one of the best selling books of all time. It has never been out of print. The prophet Al Mustafa has lived in the city of Orphalese for 12 years and is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses topics such as life and the human condition. The book is divided into chapters dealing with love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death. The book being offered for sale is in good/very good condition, especially given its age of 52 years. Text block tight, spine tight, book boards good. Pages remain bright, clear, and clean with no markings or writings. Black and white illustrations are fine. Some age spotting to text block top, and some fading and toning to the dust jacket. Dust jacket is not price clipped and retains the original $4.50 price; small, closed tear at top of jacket on front with some rubbing at top of spine edge. Corners good. Pictures are of the book actually being sold and indicate my description of the condition. BORZOI BOOKS imprint on dust jacket cover is not a label; it is printed into the paper. A good/very good copy of an influential book in philosophy and religion, very collectible, becoming scarce even in this printing due to the book's popularity.
