Title / Spring Snow, Maruyama, KyotoArtist / Koitsu TsuchiyaDimensions / 43 x 28.5 cmPrinted in 1935, Doi print edition1870-1949 Born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Tsuchiya Koitsu was an ukiyo-e artist and printmaker active from the Meiji to Showa periods. He produced works in a style of pictorial expression known as kōranga (ray painting) used by his master Kobayashi Kiyochika, as well as nihonga (hand paintings) and shinpanga (new woodblock prints). Although he lived and studied painting at Kobayashi Kiyochika's house for many years, he did not produce many works because he had to do a lot of housework and chores in place of his master. However, he is known as a popular artist for his elegant use of color and delicate expression, which he inherited from his master.
