Description: Kon-Tiki by Thor Keyerdahl 1960 7th Printing Perma Book Paperback The Kon-Tiki expedition was a remarkable journey by raft across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands. Led by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl, the expedition aimed to prove that prehistoric South Americans could have colonized Polynesia by drifting on ocean currents. In 1947, Heyerdahl and his team constructed the raft named Kon-Tiki out of balsa logs and other native materials in an indigenous style. They sailed for 101 days, covering 6,900 km (4,300 miles) before reaching Raroia in the Tuamotus. Although Heyerdahl’s full hypothesis of a South American origin for Polynesians is generally rejected today, his book about the experience became a bestseller, and a documentary motion picture titled “Kon-Tiki” won an Academy Award in 1951. Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, Heyerdahl suspected that the South Sea Islands had been settled by an ancient race from thousands of miles to the east, led by a mythical hero named Kon-Tiki. He decided to prove his theory by duplicating the legendary voyage. The original Kon-Tiki raft is now on display at the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo. Condition: GOOD
