Description: During World War I, more than a thousand Mikados were built for many American railroads using a standardized design. The Santa Fe used their massive Mikados until the 1950s, often doubleheading them with brand-new diesels! With the LGB model, the exhaust beats echo off the canyon walls and across the plains of your LGB layout, thanks to a digital sound system that uses recordings of an actual steam locomotive. Plus you’ll hear the sounds of the bell, whistle, air pump, safety valve, feedwater pump and brakes. Additional features can be controlled with the LGB Multi-Train System. And the LGB model looks good too with big drive wheels, incredible detailing and prototypical lettering. Plus, with a weight of more than 7.3 kg (16 pounds), it will haul your longest trains up Cajon Pass. The Prototype The 2-8-2 “Mikados” were among the most successful steam locomotives of all time. The first Mikados were built in 1897 at the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the narrow gauge railways of Japan. During World War I, the United States Railroad Administration adopted the Mikado as its standard freight locomotive, and more than a thousand “Mikes” were delivered to more than a dozen American railways. Later, thousands more were supplied to railways around the world. Many Mikados survived until the end of the steam era in the 1950s, a clear indication for a successful design.
