Description: Description: In his provocative and unflinching artworks, figurative printmaker and painter Sigmund Abeles (b.1934) focuses on the reality of human existence. In the catalogue for Abeles' important 1999 print retrospective at the Bates College Museum of Art director Genetta McLean writes: "Among the later, major prints, "Conundrum", a lithograph done in 1987, depicts a nude model diagonally draped upside down in a chair with a jigsaw puzzle partially assembled in the foreground. This, and other works like it, are exceptionally energetic and almost Baroque in style." This image--on buff-colored Rives paper--was produced in an edition of 50 plus 10 artist's proofs. The beautiful, richly inked lithograph being offered for sale is one of the signed artist's proofs.
