Description: The International Collectors Library was a book club series published by Doubleday, from the later 1940s through the late 1980s. They were intended to be inexpensive reprints of great literature similar to Everyman's Library, Modern Library, Penguin Classics, and Oxford World's Classics. The books are all about 8 1/2 inches x 5 3/4 inches (Octavo or 8vo) book size. The binding designs were adapted based on old "Golden Age of Bookmaking" bindings and made to look like leather- bound copies. The bindings are embossed with 24K gold embellishments, and some copies (all of these but it is a little worn on some) have gilt top edges. A sewn satin ribbon marker is in each book. There were over 400 editions published in a variety of bindings, colors, and opening page designs. One of these books (The Silver Chalice) also includes the little insert about the book that came with the book. I realize that my description of condition is geared toward someone who might purchase these to use for staging purposes and they would be great for that. However, I taught high school and college literature for many years, and if you are one who buys these books to read (rather than wasting resources on new printings), I can honestly say, this is a nice selection.
