Description: Macleania insignis (Small, Seed-Grown Plants from my heavily variegated 'Pied Beauty' clone.***) Originally collected in a cloud forest of Southern Mexico, this plant can either be epiphytic or terrestrial, and can easily be grown in hanging pots. This spectacular Rhododendron relative offers small inflorescences of flowers from late spring to summer, on tall, arching stems. The 1 1/2" orange, waxy flowers are naturally pollenated by Hummingbirds, and are followed by white tinged blue, blueberry-sized, edible fruit. The berries don't really have much flavor, but they are pleasantly sweet. My mother plant grows in morning sun with afternoon shade, in an unheated greenhouse. The temperatures range from the mid to upper 80s, with the lows dropping into the mid 30s in winter. It is kept continuously moist, except in winter, when it is allowed to just dry between waterings. I recommend growing in a loose yet moisture-retentive potting mix; an Epiphytic Orchid type mix is ideal. I use a combination of organic potting soil (with mycorrhizal fungi), fine-grade Orchid fir bark, and perlite. This offering is for one small 2nd year seedling in a 2 1/4" pot - shipped in pot. The young plants I'm shipping are approximately 3" tall, and already have sweet little caudices forming, and a minimum of two branches - if they're topped, they will send out more branches relatively quickly, which also helps plump up the caudices faster. To reach maturity and begin blooming will require about 5 to 7 more years. ***Please note: these are young plants grown from seeds that were harvested from my heavily variegated, and extremely gorgeous 'Pied Beauty' clone (shown in the last photo). Only a few out of all of the seedlings grown from this parent have turned out to be variegated, but there is still a chance. I've recently noticed a few more that are starting to show a little hint, so am hopeful! The leaves of the 'Pied Beauty' clone are larger than on my standard form plants, and the coloration of the new foliage on the 'Pied Beauty' clone is also much more vibrant; I would imagine that those traits will be imparted to these seedlings. These young seedlings are , so will start growing at 2 years, and will start growing at a more rapid pace -- an appropriate old adage: the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap. I have been collecting and cultivating rare and exotic plants for nearly 50 years, and I take great pride in the condition and health of the plants and seeds that I offer here on ebay. All photos are of plants in my own collection. The small plants will be very similar to what may be seen in the 2nd to last photo. NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING - SORRY - I ONLY SHIP TO THE US. I do combine shipping for multiple items - please request a new shipping total before checking out.
