Malas are a set of beads commonly used by Hindus and Buddhists, but can be used by everyone. Malas are used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra, prayer, or the name or names of a deity. This practice is known in Sanskrit as japa. Sometimes Malas are referred to as Japa Malas, which are the one and the same. Also Malas are known In Japanese Buddhism as "juzu", in Chinese culture "shu zhu", Theravada Buddhists in Burma call them "seik badi", and some call this tool a "Buddhist rosary". In Tibetan Buddhism, traditionally malas of 108 beads are used. Our Malas have 108 beads. In traditional Buddhist thought, people are said to have 108 afflictions or kleshas. There are six senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, and consciousness) multiplied by three reactions (positive, negative, or indifference) making 18 "feelings." Each of these feelings can be either "attached to pleasure or detached from pleasure" making 36 "passions", each of which may be manifested in the past, present, or future. All the combinations of all these things makes a total of 108, which are represented by the beads. How do I use a Mala? Mantras are typically repeated hundreds or even thousands of times. The mala is used so that one can focus on the meaning or sound of the mantra rather than counting its repetitions. One repetition is said for each bead while turning the thumb clockwise around each bead, though some traditions or practices may call for counterclockwise motion or specific hand and finger usage. When arriving at the Guru bead (the larger bead), both Hindus and Buddhists traditionally turn the mala around and then go back in the opposing direction. Within the Buddhist tradition, this repetition of the beads serves to remind practitioners of the teaching that it is possible to break the cycle of birth and death. About the Crystals: Chrysocolla Spiritual Properties: Chyrsocolla is first and foremost a Stone of Communication, a teaching stone, encouraging us to reveal our highest knowledge so that others may benefit from our experiences. Its very essence is devoted to expression, empowerment and teaching. The serenity of its turquoise-blue color discharges negative energies, calms, and allows truth and inner wisdom to surface and be heard. A peaceful stone, it emphasizes the power our words and actions have on those around us, and encourages compassion and strengthening of character. It is a stone of empowerment of the feminine energies, teaching that genuine power is best expressed through gentleness. It is a stone of the Goddess, and those who resonate with it will likely feel her ancient and enduring energies rising within themselves. Chrysocolla is a stone of wise women everywhere. Worn or carried, it helps older women to express their knowledge and experience through writing, painting, music, crafts or acting. It is a remarkable gift for first-time grandmothers and great-grandmothers to help balance their new caring role, and is a good stone for those who may feel nervous at home at night if living alone. It is a talisman of musicians and an excellent charm for learning new musical instruments or joining a choir, orchestra or theatre group, and to have the confidence to play in public. Those who chant, sing or speak mantras will benefit most from wearing this bracelet. Chrysocolla also supports those who work in the computer industry and accountants by calming emotional stress. For designers and inventors, it encourages inspiration by combining creative ideas with new practical applications. Within the home, it draws off the negative energies of rocky relationships and situations that are constantly changing. It provides stability, acceptance and great inner strength. One strange property of Chrysocolla known since antiquity, is its property of encouraging people to stay at home. It is the stone of monks, hermits and prisoners, diminishing the anxiety and depression that often accompanies seclusion. People with wandering temperaments, who never stay in one place, would benefit from it. And Onyx Spiritual Properties: Onyx is a stone of self-mastery. The appearance is a black stone. Enhances self-mastery, steadfastness and determination. Onyx is a grounding stone and also used to deflect negativity of others. It can help one absorb whatever energy the wearer is needing from the universe. Initiates the process of centering a total person. Helps hearing problems, heart trouble and ulcers. Please note that the Dark Travelers mala uses the same crystals as the Midnight Garden mala but has significantly more blue in the Chrysocolla giving it a different appearance. Remember to take your Mala with you! Wearing a mala as a bracelet or necklace is common. This helps keep your affirmations or intentions with you throughout the day. People may choose to carry their mala in a mala bag that is kept in a pocket or purse as another way of keeping their practice with them as they move through their lives. Having your mala with you at all times means that you can use it while in waiting rooms, while in transit, while in lines or while taking a break. Other people keep their mala in their meditation shrine when it is not in use. A mala can become a beautiful feature of your sacred space, adding color, texture, and intention to your shrine.
