First Grade is structured as a picture book – with sensitive black and white photographs of schoolkids punctuated by their masterful artworks and with thoughtful observations and remembrances - from class projects to creaky windows, a pink - eyed bunny rabbit and dedicated colleagues. Marcia served as a teacher in 1965 – 1966 in Chicago ’s Von Humboldt School which closed in 2013. I hope you ’ll take a moment out of your busy day, close your eyes and think of your first or second grade teacher. When I do this, I remember vividly, a person who shepherded a group of unruly puppies from the world of kindergarten (baby stuff) into the world of ABC’s and books and real math – days wrapped in precious construction paper and the passing out of carefully guarded and awfully blunt safety scissors. Marcia’s pictures embody and bring back those memories. Teachers are under fire from all sides right now. Reactionary and wrong - minded factions target dedicated educators every day. Funding has not kept pace with inflation. Rare Nest Gallery is happy to support Donors Choose – an online resource for teachers providing funding tailored to specific classrooms.ARTIST’S STATEMENT “Art has been an important aspect of my entire life.
