RIC III Marcus Aurelius 245 Composition: Silver, 18mm diameter, 3.31g weight This coin was produced to commemorate the first decennium (10-year period) of Marcus Aurelius' reign. Marcus Aurelius became emperor in 161 A.D. upon the natural death of his adopted father, Emperor Antoninus Pius. Marcus was known for his philosophical writings, including his famous work "Meditations." He was a Stoic philosopher who believed in the importance of self-discipline, reason, and ethical behavior. He saw his role as emperor as a duty to serve the people of Rome and to promote justice and virtue. During his reign, Marcus faced a number of military challenges, including wars against the Parthians, Germans, and other groups on the Roman frontier. He personally led his armies on many of these campaigns, and is known for his successful military campaigns against the Marcomanni and other Germanic tribes. He was a respected and admired emperor, both in his own time and in later generations. He was remembered for his wisdom, his humility, and his commitment to the ideals of Stoic philosophy. He died in 180 AD of illness while on campaign in the Danube region, and was succeeded by his natural son Commodus, whose vices stood in strong contrast to his father's virtues.
