Description: the JNR class c58 steam locomotive was a 2-6-2 type engine - the only 2-6-2 to actually run on japanese rails -designed as a successor to the classes 8620 and c50......intended for both freight and passenger service on secondary routes, 431 locomotives were constructed by kisha seizo and kawasaki between 1938 and 1947 - with production virtually halted in the wwll years..... top operating speed was 85 kph, and although the design had good towing power for its designated service on secondary passenger routes, the c58 proved underpowered for freight service....the c58-98 was built in 1938 by kisha seizo and served until retirement in hokkaido on secondary passenger routes......the locomotive was retired and statically preserved in 1975 - still standing resolute in fukagawa city, hokkaido, japan...... Micro Ace is one of the dominant triumvirate of n scale manufactures in Japan - Kato and Tomix both being better known outside of Japan....Micro Ace clearly markets the broadest line of locomotives among the 3 and arguably features the finest detail work on their product............ i acquired this c58 from a private party who averred that he had displayed the model in his home showcase since the day of its purchase......upon arrival, the model's condition seemed a testament to the original owner's veracity.......nonetheless, having never traded with the individual, i decided on a test run which was extremely short lived as the c58 immediately seized up when activated......detailed inspection revealed the root cause as an improperly assembled side detail which interfered with the path of the coupling rod on the last driver.......the question was remediation method - was that detail a press fit component or glued.........i decided not to answer the question and chose a rectification method that would accommodate either fastening approach......i used a shim to wedge the component into better alignment without attempting to remove and reassemble the interferer.......the last photo shows the shim in place; i am going to include the ad hoc repositioner underneath the lower half of the packaging's storage tray in case a new owner wants to confirm the process.....i then let the c58 rest for several days to insure that the component had not re-shifted and proceeded with the test run.........the c58 performed smoothly and consistently at 27% on the rheostat for n scale operating speed......the light - locomotive end only, tender end is a dummy - was a comparatively vibrant orange considering the pre chip led technology.......the wheel sets are clean......the jewel storage case is free of blemish...... the only accessory for the model is a rapido coupler for the front end, whose installation protocol will have to intuited, as microace provides only a rudimentary sketch.....
