The painting measures 20 3/4 x 16 inches and is painted on on ancient hardwood artists panel that has cross grain sliding dovetails added to keep it from warping. It is initialed and dated by the artist in the lower right. Aside from a couple of short panel separations along the top edge, the painting is in excellent condition. The reverse has the artist's name and snippet of biographical info. Paul Meissner (1907-1983) was an Austrian modernist painter. From 1925, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Ferdinand Andri. In 1934 he continued his education in Rome and in 1936 he was a competitor in the Art Competitions of the Berlin Olympics. Between 1954 and 1975 Meissner was President of the Vienna Secession for five terms. At the start of his career, Meissner painted figuratively, later he focused on creating abstract works. Meissner said in 1969: "I belong to the generation that began to paint abstractly because they saw the human grimace unveiled and no longer wanted to depict it." In the course of his career, he received several awards and prizes for his work, including the Austrian State Prize for Fine Arts in 1950, and the Gold Medal for Services to the Province of Vienna.
