Description: This piece was given to the seller by the East European historian, Anna Cienciala, who brought it back from a lecturing tour in Eastern Europe in the 1960s. It is a miniature version of the popular and ancient Central Asian (Persian) folk and classical three-stringed instrument, the Tanbur, which is related to both the sitar and the Western lute. The piece was initially displayed on the mantel of the recipient's home fireplace. After a few months, a small pile of what looked like sawdust was found under where it rested, eventually topped by the small body of a boring insect -- inadvertently imported with the instrument. No further freeloaders have been detected in the nearly 70 years it has been in the U. S. The neck has no frets and it is possible that some tanburs did not either. The carved design on the neck isvery much like the carved decorative wooden folk art of Persia. One of the pegs has been broken in half and glued together. If any strings are put on the instrument they must be gut or plastic strings (which have the least tension). Please see our photos.
