Description: Nadim Samman: Poetics of Encryption by Nadim Samman, Neil Holt An Encounter Between Art and the TechnosphereProprietary algorithms, secret data troves, and inscrutable systems rule the day. How is this registered in art? In Poetics of Encryption Nadim Samman explores works that highlight the hidden dimensions of our technological landscape. Running counter to erroneous claims regarding a new culture of transparency and openness, such artworks address black sites, black boxes, and black holes-all the while, toggling between enlightened concern and occult dreaming. Long Description A critical appraisal of arts entanglement in technological encryption "We are all inside this thing--but how?" This book explores 21st-century arts reckonings with the technosphere. Outlining the concept of encryption that underlies this infrastructural condition, Samman explores motifs of confinement, capture and burial, as well as access and exclusion from secured domains. Poetics of Encryption excavates the art of our times in relation to these motifs, as it quests through caves, cables, codes, satellites and icons. Toggling between enlightened concern and occult dreaming, it surveys a counterintuitive aesthetic of the interface.
