Description: NEWFOUNDLAND 94 1910 9c LOGGING CAMP WITH RARE UPU MADAGASCAR CANCEL IN RED (#2) Please read the TERMS OF SALE below prior to bidding. BID WITH CONFIDENCE - SATISFACTION GUARANTEED NEWFOUNDLAND 94 1910 9c LOGGING CAMP WITH RARE UPU MADAGASCAR CANCEL IN RED (#2) Nine cent, olive green, 'LOGGING CAMP, RED INDIAN LAKE' stamp from the John Guy issue of 1910, lithographed, no watermark*, line perf. 12.0x12.0. Member countries of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) were required to forward examples of new stamp issues to the headquarters of the UPU in Berne, Switzerland which then distributed the stamps to the other members for their records. The stamp offered here is one of only THREE STAMPS OF THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE IN EXISTENCE with the receiving cancel from the African island nation of MADAGASCAR. The circular receiving stamp is printed in red: POSTES ET TELEGRAPHES * MADAGASCAR * between a double complete circle with the 3 line straight COLLECTION/DE/BERNE stamped in the middle of the double circle. Due to the layout of the stamps on the receiving sheet from Berne, only a portion of the receiving cancel is present on each stamp. Whitehead, Morris and Company Limited of London printed the 1910 Guy issue stamps using lithographic plates provided by MacDonald and Sons, Limited of London. MacDonald and Sons, made the final lithographic plate by using multiple paper transfers of each design from ETCHED dies. This may account in large part for the overall poor quality of the images seen in this issue. Stamps were printed on medium weight and relatively soft, white wove paper with horizontal mesh, white (almost colorless) gum. This issue was produced to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the establishment at Cupers Cove (Cupids) in Conception Bay in 1610 of the second (after Jamestown in 1607) British "Plantation" in North America. Sponsored by the London and Bristol Company of England The actual "planting" of the new colony was supervised by John Guy. This stamp and the 10c stamp had nothing whatsoever to do with John Guy but were simply a not to be missed opportunities to promote Newfoundland's recent entry into the paper industry on a world scale with the 1909 completion of the Harmsworth Pulp and Paper mill in Grand Falls. * MONCKTON BASTED MILLS KENT or WHITEHEAD MORRIS & Co LTD LONDON SOUTH AFRICA & EGYPT watermarks have been reported on some proofs and stamps (re. Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue by Walsh and Butt) Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot.
