Description: NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY. 2 cash coin. YUAN FENG BAO in seal script. Hartill 16.249 or very similar. This coin was issued by the emperor Shen Zong, between the years 1078-85 AD, which was the "Yuan Feng Period." Shen Zong reigned from 1068-85, but Chinese emperors habitually reset the calendar by declaring a new and auspicious "year period." The inscription means "current money of the Yuan Feng era." The Northern Song Dynasty was a period of much cultural and urban development in China, though not necessarily of military strength. The Dynasty came to an abrupt end early in the following century, but it was prosperous while it lasted and turned out a lot of coinage, which is why Northern Song coins are common. Coins of this period were often issued in various scripts, so you can find the same one in running script, seal script, and regular script. This coin is genuine. I not only got it from a reliable source, but it shows (as fakes do not) plausible wear. The reverse is blank, as is the case with Northern Song coins.
