Description: With all the reprints out there, from a picture online alone it can be very confusing to know what is real and what is a copy just from a picture online. But there’s a HUGE difference in value, appearance, and of course historical significance between an ideal original higher quality art piece direct from Shepard Fairey in February 2008 and a printed paper poster of unknown date and origin. The ideal Hope poster by Shepard Fairey is this: The limited edition signed and numbered screen print on wove paper announced on February 12, 2008 and available for order direct from Shepard Fairey on Thursday, February 14, 2008 for $30 each, one per per customer/household. There were 600 signed and numbered screen prints on thick wove paper stock made and sold directly from Sheppard Fairey. They were produced when the cheaper posters distributed free for posting were starting to turn up on eBay, which was very disappointing and not in keeping at all with their purpose which was to support and promote Obama’s campaign before the primaries. The proceeds from the special signed limited edition screen prints were used to pay for the production and distribution of larger quantities of the cheaply produced Hope street posters to be posted outdoors in support of Obama’s presidential campaign. So in a way, this special limited edition art print series really helped support the much wider distribution of HOPE posters across the country. The limited edition art prints sold out immediately. One is in the collection of the Smithsonian and most of the surviving 600 screen prints are in art collections (as opposed to political memorabilia collections) but it’s enormous significance relates to its iconic status as one of the most influential and important political campaign images ever produced. The influence of the Obama Hope art design is seen to this day. Sheppard Fairey is a very accomplished and famous and collected artist. Though any one piece in his vast output cannot possibly define his entire body of work, the Hope image he created in support of O’Bama’s 2008 presidential campaign will always be his most famous work. It is also arguably the single most famous and successful example of political activism art in history. Shepard Fairey keeps the web page announcing the limited signed edition of 600 art prints up to this day to make sure people understand the difference and significance of the limited edition. These are the ultimate Hope posters and should not be confused with any other printings or copies. Here is the link (one has to cut-and-paste this web address because the eBay system does not allow live links): https://obeygiant.com/obama-ebay-disappointment/ 24 x 36 inches. Mint condition! Kept rolled as shipped since 2008! Signed by Shepard Fairey and numbered 123/600. I think of this more of an art piece than a campaign piece but of course it is both. It has been rolled up and literally untouched by human hands except for a minute to take these photos. I have seen cheap posters offered as if they were one of the 600 limited edition signed and numbered screen prints (intentionally or unintentionally). This description may help people avoid confusion!
