Description: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., (1809 -94) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. A member of the Fireside Poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. He was also an important medical reformer. One of his most famous poems is "Old Ironsides," which was influential in the preservation of the USS Constitution, a ship that is still in the harbor in Boston. He taught at Dartmouth and Harvard and was said to have been a fascinating lecturer.
