Description: PAIR of PRIMITIVE LATE 16thC ELIZABETHAN CARVED WOODEN CHURCH ANGELS! A wonderful pair of Primitive and highly characterful late 16thC / Circa 1600 Carved Wooden Kneeling Male Angels dating to the late Tudor / Elizabethan Period and showing superb overall patina with remnants of original Green Paint and Gilt, their Hairstyles elaborate and particularly well expressed. These are Carved from some form of Fruitwood which of course is slightly lighter in weight than Oak, the reverse of each piece shows remnants of original “Pegs” to the Shoulder where they would once have had Wings, sadly these are no longer present. The Base of each piece show what appear to be old Collection Labels all as shown in the images above..Each piece is nearly identical in height with one piece standing approx 28.5cm the other approx 28cm, the width Hand to Hand is approx 11cm on each piece, one Hand on each piece may have once been holding something?.. Condition; Beautiful period condition showing age related wear and patina of usage, there are areas of Nose and Finger wear and natural shrinkage within the Wood itself, odd remnants of old Bug damage which had long been treated and not active in any way. As stated above the reverse of each Shoulder would have once had Wings which are no longer present as all shown. Please study all images prior to purchase for an accurate report!
