Description: Papier-mâché covered wooden box attributable to Gemma Taccogna. Gemma Taccogna (1923-2007) was an Italian-American artist who had a gallery and studio in Capistrano Mexico and innovated a unique design and production technique of papier-mâché. When Taccogna left Mexico, she left her studio behind for the accompanying artists to carry on. Subsequently, while this piece is handsigned "Capistrano Mexico", there is no certification to prove its the work of Taccogna. Thus, it is described as "in the style of" Gemma Taccogna. The lid was originally attached by linen tape and remains the same. At some point in the past someone added what appears to be scotch tape to the top to secure it. I decided not to remove it for fear it would damage the surface. There are small areas where the surface had been bumped or nicked resulting in the wood being exposed under the surface treatment, but it is still in excellent condition considering it’s age and travel. 2.5” tall 5” wide 10.5” long Please send me a message with any questions or if you would like additional images.
