Description: P&C Hand Forged Tool Company began business in Idaho in 1914 but found its way to suburban Portland, Oregon by 1924. They were successful in building a tool manufacturing business over the next 20 years. The success meant that inevitably they would be acquired by a larger entity and in 1941 they were purchased by the growing PLOMB/ProTo empire with whom they’d had long standing contractual agreements. P&C maintained business as usual while PLOMB used P&C’s facilities as needed. Adjustable Wrenches of the Crescent-type are (and were) criticized for not holding settings. C.W.Coslow created a solution and applied for a Patent in early September 1957. Less than a month passed before it was granted. The Patent was assigned to Pendleton Tool Industries, Inc., Los Angeles, Calif., of which P&C was a subsidiary. In 1953 P&C changed the manner in which it branded its tools by adding an “R-Circle” registered mark (see images). This Wrench carries that R-Circle” and “Pat.Pend.” (see images) that strongly suggests that this Wrench was produce during the period of tome before granting of the Patent, meaning 1957. This is supported by the J.P.Danielson Date Code “B 11 7” forged into the Handle (see images) and used by most of the Plomb associated companies at the time. See “Alloy Artifacts” for a lengthy discussion about this Date Coding, http://alloy-artifacts.org/danielson-jp-company.html#dates. The above is confirmed, in our opinion, by the Wrench’s appearances in Catalogs of the period. The complete line of Clik-Stop Wrenches appear in a 1958 “Shapleigh Hardware Company” — of St. Louis — document (https://archive.org/details/PAndCToolCo1958/page/n13/mode/2up) as part of an “Adjustable Wrench Assortment” and “Open Stock Clik-Stop”. Then in “P & C Tool Co.: Catalog No. 5900, P & C Tool Co.; Pendleton Tool Industries, Inc. 1959”, (https://archive.org/details/p-and-c-1959-catalog-5900/P%20and%20C%201959%20Catalog%205900/page/n7/mode/2up?view=theater) the Clik-Stop” is described as: “New P&C Clik-Stop wrench handles like ordinary adjustable. Merely turning Golden Knurl clicks jaw automatically into any opening wanted. It won’t work lose. No buttons, levers or gadgets.” The Wrench is in fully-functional condition. Clicking can be felt and heard as the Worm is turned and the Dynamic Jaw seems to remain in place. There is evidence of previous use. Some chipping of the Chrome Plating is visible on the Jaws (see images) along with light abrasion on typical flat wear surfaces (see images). There is a slight hitch when reopening the Jaws after closing completely. It is a minor issue insofar as it will seldom be used in that position, but might be resolved with proper lubrication. The Wrench is ready to serve as a tool or as part of a Show-and-Tell Collection. Little to no cleaning would be required for either purpose. We will ship Clik-Stop by USPS Ground Advantage on the next regular business day following payment.
