The covers are clean with shelf wear to the corners and edges. The gold seals on the front and backs of the covers are bright and sharp. The bindings are solid and square and the front and back inside hinges are free from any paper cracking. All tissue guards are present over the steel plate illustrations. All of the pages are present and securely attached. All map plates are present and free of any tears. There is no foxing (age spots) on any of the pages. The pages have browned a bit due age. All foldouts are present. Lee's letter of surrender (yellow page) is tear free. The errata is present in the the back of Volume 2 indicating a true first edition. Volume 1 is 584 pages, 15 maps and 2 letters. Volume 2 is 647 pages, 28 maps and Lee's letter of surrender. Each volume is 6.50 by 9.25 inches tall. Volume 1 is 584 pages and volume 2 is 647 pages including index. This is set is very difficult to find in this condition.
