The 1st Earl bought Chevening in 1715 and by 1717 improvements were in hand. His are the side projections. The main block was the work of the 3rd Earl Stanhope between 178 and 1796. The house was bequeathed to the Nation by the 7th and last Earl Stanhope. The Chevening Estate Act stipulated that the future resident should be the Prime Minister a Cabinet Minister the widow or lineal descendant of King George VI or the spouse widow or widower of such a descendant. It was offered to Prince Charles but he turned it down in 1980. Since then Chevening has been used by the British government to house successive Foreign Secretaries.
