Portraitures Of Horses, A Few People, Some Dogs & Other Animals....(1952 First)

Description: Full Title: Portraitures Of Horses, A Few People, Some Dogs & Other Animals, With Autobiographical Comment and Narrative Fordacre Studios, Shrewsbury, New Jersey, 1952. Hardcover in Dust Jacket. By George Ford Morris. Presumed First Edition (NAP). Condition Continued: The interior of the book is in excellent condition. Scrolling through the pages, I haven't found any instances of soiling. On the few pages with text there is only very light toning at the margins. There are an enormous number of illustrations, the large majority of them are in black and white. They are all in excellent condition. The pages look terrific, there's the lightest little semi-crease at the bottom corner of the first two pages. I don't think there's another crease to be found anywhere in the book. There are no placeholder creases, no turned-down corners. There are no attachments in the book. There is no writing of any kind. There are two little markings, little purple stampings of the name of the previous owner Alfred J. Roach, one on the blank front inside cover and one on the blank front end paper. I was fortunate to be able to go into his home and go through his library by myself back in 2010 when he was preparing to go into a nursing home at the age of 95. Alfred J. Roach lived a very interesting and adventurous life. He told his story in an autobiography titled Fire in My Belly published in 1998. He had a remarkably diverse career working among other things as a boxer, fireman, waterfront cargo checker, securities salesman, brewery company executive, and electronics manufacturer. He was the founder and President of Tii Network Technologies, a Telecommunications equipment company.' I've rated the dust jacket Poor because the front flap is missing. The first photo will give you a pretty clear look at the rest of the jacket so I don't need to go into too much detail but if you can't make it out there is a long tear at the juncture between the rear cover and rear flap. The jacket has a very large and wide fitted protective cover, although it's not wide enough to cover the rear flap. From the front cover of the jacket: 'Being a collection of more than five hundred reproductions of the artist's and author's work in oil, water color, pastel, crayon, charcoal, pen and pencil, as well as of his lithographs, etchings, silhouette cut-outs and sculpture; accompanied by autobiographical notes and comment covering a professional career of more than sixty-five years of effort in 'attempted portrayals of animals ad their friends'. Also 'With a Tribute by the author and an added autobiographical sketch as to the Wherefore and 'How-cum' of this book; also supplementary Postscriptal Personalia accompanied by numerous photographic illustrations, and works of other artists.''An outstanding equine artist, George Ford Morris painted portraits of horses for more than seventy years. Born in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1873, Morris studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Julian Academy in Paris. Some of his earliest illustrations of horses for magazines were done when he was seventeen. Morris' work appeared in such publications as The Horseman, Breeder's Gazette, Western Horseman, American Field and American Horseman.
