Directed by WOODY ALLEN. - When he discovers his adopted son is a genius, a New York sportswriter seeks out the boy's birth mother: a ditzy porn star and prostitute. Lenny and Amanda have an adopted son Max who turns out to be brilliant. Lenny becomes obsessed with finding Max's real parents because he believes that they too must be brilliant. When he finds that Linda Ash is Max' real mother, Lenny is disappointed. Linda is a prostitute and porn star. On top of that, she is quite possibly the dumbest person Lenny has ever met. Interwoven is a Greek chorus linking the story with the story of Oedipus. Nominated for TWO Academy Award OSCARs including Best Original Screenplay. WON OSCAR for Best Supporting Actress (Mira Sorvino). CAST includes Mira Sorvino, F. Murray Abraham, Helena Bonham Carter, David Ogden Stiers, Olympia Dukakis, Paul Giamatti, Peter Weller, George De La Pena, Marian Filali, Denisse Faye, Pamela Blair, Tony Sirico, Michael Rapaport, Steven Randazzo, Rosemary Murphy, James Remar, Jack Warden, Woody Allen. BEHIND THE SCENES TRIVIA : Mira Sorvino auditioned for the role in New York, and didn't get the role. When Woody Allen went to London to audition some British actresses, Sorvino showed up again, in full costume, and got the role. Even after their bitter and much-publicized breakup, Mia Farrow lobbied for the role of Amanda. In a 2005 interview with "Vanity Fair", Woody Allen said that he considered casting her, because he believed she would be the best actress for the role. His casting director Juliet Taylor replied "What, are you nuts?" According to Mira Sorvino, after a month into filming, Woody Allen wanted her to change the high-pitched voice she was using for her character. She said she would oblige, but told him it would completely change who the character was. Woody was ambivalent and then told her he was just thinking out loud. Mira kept the voice. In real life, Mira Sorvino graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, and is fluent in French and Mandarin Chinese.
