Lavender is an amazing plant with more benefits than you would believe. It is known to be anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, relaxing, pain relieving, anxiety lessening, improves sleep, skin healing, and so much more. Lavender hydrosol, also called lavender water, which we also sell, has some different applications than the essential oil and is produced during the oil distillation process. Please see our page for Selle Valley Hydrosol. We grow four distinct varieties of lavender, which are hand-harvested in small batches, then distilled using a hand-made copper still from Portugal. Copper has many wonderful properties, though stainless steel is most commonly used. While these are much less expensive and easier to build, using stainless steel requires the lavender oil and hydrosol to be aged afterwards to off-gas sulfites. This aging process can dramatically alter the scent of the lavender. When distilling with copper, these sulfites adhere to the copper and are naturally removed. The oil and hydrosol leaving the still is clean, pure and ready to be bottled immediately. Most of the quality lavender products from larger farms are derived from the common, higher yielding varieties such as Grosso, which we also grow. And while this is a lovely, strongly scented variety that produces a large amount of oil, it has a distinct scent and range of best uses. Lavender is not just Lavender!!! Though the more rare varieties produce much less oil and are a little more difficult to harvest because of their size, each cultivar has its own unique properties, benefits and fragrance that can vary a great deal from each other. We are pleased to offer four different lavender choices. All lavender oil is fantastic for using in a diffuser for aromatherapy purposes, which is what most people think of doing with essential oils. It is proven to be relaxing, offers relief from anxiety and depression, stress and insomnia. The varieties Seals Seven Oaks and Grosso have quite a bit of camphor in their oils, which opens airways and blood vessels--great if you’re suffering from congestion. Lavender oil really should be kept around the house as a go-to first aid item. It is one of the few which can be used directly on skin, not needing to be diluted by a carrier oil such as jojoba, coconut, almond, etc. We still recommend you test a small area first as some people are especially sensitive. Applied directly, a drop rubbed into the bottom of your child’s feet can help them relax quickly and fall asleep. I would recommend our two more relaxing varieties for this, Folgate and Royal Velvet. Mildly burn yourself cooking or putting wood in the fire? Quickly apply Seals Seven Oaks or Grosso. Lavender will rapidly reduce the pain and the burn will heal faster if you continue to apply for the next few days. Lavender’s healing properties are well known for minor cuts and scrapes, too. It disinfects, lowers pain and heals the wound faster. Add a few drops into bath water for the aromatherapy and skin healing properties. You can always buy unscented lotion, shampoo and conditioner, hand, body and dish soap, laundry detergent, face creams, etc. and add one of our oils to make it smell as strongly as you wish along with incorporating all of lavender’s fantastic benefits. Odd uses for lavender oil include removing sticker/tape residue and tree pitch off skin. Each of our four varieties will do all of the things above. However the active chemicals and scent do lend the different varieties to specific uses. You may need to try them all and pick your favorite! Below we will list what we and others have noticed and learned about the different varieties we offer. Grosso—a stronger scent, more appealing to men as it is a little less floral and sweet. A common variety as it makes a great deal of oil, so this maybe the closest to the smell you associate with “lavender.” It has more camphor which opens airways and blood vessels with less of a relaxing smell than the others. Seals Seven Oaks—also appealing to men, having more camphor and what has been described as a pleasant medicinal, minty smell. Unique and great for uplifting and cooling. A fairly strong scent, along with Grosso, so is wonderful for crafts such as making your own soaps and candles. Folgate—extremely relaxing! This variety repeatedly helps me remember my dreams. Great for calming, lessening anxiety and depression. Some say Folgate has vanilla notes. Folgate and Royal Velvet are culinary varieties. As ours are grown organically, they are free of harmful pesticides. Also as we distill with copper, our oils are pure, fresh and completely unadulterated. No sitting in barrels to off-gas sulfites is necessary with our lavender products. Nor are there any toxins such as hexane which is sometimes used to extract oil instead of steam-distilling. Our oils are safe to cook with, though you should make sure you’re not allergic or sensitive to lavender before consuming it. If you wish to make lavender lemonade, lavender syrup for coffee or cocktails, lavender candy, cookies, cakes, chocolate and more, these are the two varieties you’d use. They are strong, so start sparingly! Royal Velvet—also a very relaxing scent with similar sleep deepening properties like the Folgate. People often say Royal Velvet smells like honey. Super soothing.
