PSA 4 - 1934-36 Batter-Up # 56 Sammy Byrd New York Yankees

Description: A PSA graded VG-EX 4 - 1934-36 Batter-Up card of Sammy Byrd of the New York Yankees. The Batter-Up set was issued over a three-year span (1934-1936) by the National Chicle Gum Company. The low series cards (#1-80) can be found in a variety of colors, including blue, gray, green, purple, red and sepia. The high series cards (#81-192) are more difficult to find and are also slightly smaller in size. High series cards are typically found printed in black & white, although some cards can be found with a slight blue or sepia tint. The cards were intended to be displayed by "popping out" the player and folding the card along the factory fold line to make it "stand up". Because of this, many Batter-Up cards are found with creases along the factory fold line and are sometimes missing the top section of the card surrounding the player. This particular card has been "popped-out" and folded along the factory fold-line, but the top section of the card is still completely intact. This example features a "gray" tint and has bold printing, nice focus and clean edges. The corners are consistent with those found on most EXMT/EXMT+ examples, with the exception of a light ding on the upper left corner. There is a light vertical crease (approx. 1/4" long) that extends from the top edge downward to the player's cap. On the back of the card there is a light diagonal surface crease (approx. 3/4" long) that extends from the left portion of the factory fold-line upwards at a 45 degree angle towards the "pop-out" outline of the player, but it does not show on the front. Otherwise, the card appears to be free of any additional creasing. The back is somewhat dirty in a few spots, but is otherwise fairly clean. With card being popped-out and folded and the other flaws, we would have expected this card to receive a PSA 3.5 grade, but PSA graded it higher than expected. The front still has very nice eye appeal, but the card is slightly over-graded in our opinion. We have priced it slightly lower than we would normally sell a PSA 4 example for.
