Description: Rare Antique Liverpool Large Creamware Satirical Transfer Decoration Jug c1790 Offered for sale is this rare Liverpool creamware pitcher or jug decorated two with transfer printed images, which dates to circa 1790. Many British potters produced creamware but few of them marked their wares, especially earlier wares, which can make attribution very problematic. Known centres of production include Staffordshire, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol, Bovey Tracey in Devon, Derbyshire and many other places. Sadler and Green of Liverpool developed (soon after the porcelain factories) a form of transfer printing on earthenware called ‘bat’ printing which was used extensively on creamwares. Attribution of these creamware pitchers is made more difficult, as on occasions the piece is made in Staffordshire and decorated in Liverpool, also several other potteries made this type of ware which was much in vogue in the late 18th century. It is decorated with a Georgian town scape, depicting an argument between street beggars and cart driver with street cleaner looking on and gent watching in the background. The reverse depicts two ragged chimney sweeps, black with soot leaving a grand house. Seeing these two lowly characters out of the house is a coloured servant, grandly dressed in full livery, showing him to be greatly superior to the two sweeps. The cartoons are framed top and bottom with simple burgundy lines, which are also used to accent the rim and handle. The jug was neatly potted and turned, and has a plain loop handle. No maker's mark. The Liverpool jug is approx. 19.7cm tall by 17.6cm from spout edge to handle at the widest point. The jug is in good condition, there is minor surface wear on the transfer decoration and enamel. There is crazing throughout, no chips, cracks or restoration. This a rare find and would make a great addition for a serious collector. Please see pictures for more details. Thanks for looking and Happy Bidding!
