Rare Cowan Pottery Art Deco Modernist Bird Sculpture Terra Cotta Maltese Falcon

Description: FREE SHIPPING This stellar evocative sculpture measures approximately 8.25" t. and is properly marked with the round die-impressed Cowan logo (and many other hand-written marks). Extraordinary streamlined design that rarely surfaces on the market--and never in this unusual crackle glaze that Cowan called Terra Cotta. Note the many variations in color and texture that appear in various locations. (See last photo for examples.) Designer was A. Drexler Jacobson, who taught for many years at the Silvermine Guild in Connecticut. He was a member of the avant-garde, short-lived consortium called AUDAC (Associated Union of Decorative Artists and Craftsmen). For Cowan Pottery, Jacobson contributed 6 designs in total. This figurine is highly sought after. It's typically glazed in gunmetal black, so the collectors refer to it as the Maltese Falcon in jest. The actual title of this piece is "Introspection."
