Description: An interesting print rendered in etching and drypoint by Hungarian artist Pal Fried (1893-1976). The image depicts a pair of dromedary camels in a desert landscape, probably in Algiers or Tunisia. This Orientalist imagery is quite unusual for Fried who became famous in the United States for his portraits of pretty girls, ballerinas, and Hollywood stars. This etching dates to his early years when based in France and traveling to broaden his artistic experience, it was probably etched in the 1920s or early 1930s. Good sized, the image measures 13 x 9 3/4 inches, sheet size is approx. 18 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches. It is printed in dark green ink on fine cream colored wove paper and, aside from a small dog ear to the right margin corner, it is in excellent condition with no mat burn or tape residue - it does not appear to have ever been framed or matted. Pal Fried aka. Fried Pal (1893-1976) was a Hungarian/American painter and printmaker. He was born in Budapest in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and studied at the Budapesti Akadémia under Professor Hugo Poll. Fried later moved to Paris to study under Lucien Simone and there fell under the spell of the French Impressionist school of Renoir and Degas. He spent many years traveling afield in France, Spain and North Africa. Through his travels and study he widened and enriched his palette and acquired mastery of light and movement. After returning to Paris, Fried concentrated on portraiture in which he became a recognized master. In the postwar years, Fried emigrated to the U.S. and became a citizen in 1953. He taught at the Academy of Arts in New York and developed his own unique style and technique. Pal Fried's signature has always caused confusion in the U.S., despite his years of living outside of Hungary and becoming a U.S. Citizen, Fried, throughout his life, persisted in signing his work in the Hungarian fashion of last name preceding given name.
