Description: Charming and rare Igbo mask with figure attached on rear, fashioned to give the appearance it’s holding on to the rear of the head. This example was painted with white kaolin, now showing wear and patina in spots, with a cross motif carved in the forehead. Mask is in good vintage condition with marks, patina and wear consistent with age and use. Please refer to photos. Mask measures 19” x 9” x 10.5” *** stand not included The Igbo people have variety of art forms and cultural practices, because they are decentralized in groups. Some of their masks are worn and danced by young men during annual yam harvest festivals and ceremonies held in honor of the earth spirit. Other masks such as this one, are danced at royal functions related to divinities of water spirit (owu). During raining seasons most daily activities are interrupted for a month, in order to celebrate the advent of the water spirit.
