Description: 19th century Rembrandt's 1635 etching (Bartsch 340) entitled "The Great Jewish Bride" on laid paper, by the noted French artist Amand Durand (1831-1905). This particular engraving was produced by heliogravure process with hand etching to reinforce detail which was not deemed sufficient by the heliogravure process alone. As a result, this highly desirable etching shows considerable fine detail and burr. The verso shows a red stamp "G. Rapilly - Paris, Helio A.D." The laid paper lines are visible in the verso enhanced Pic. Rembrandt's signature and the year 1635 are extremely difficult to see on the right side since they are fully covered by the rich black burr. The apparent plate mark dimensions are ~ 8 6/8" x 6 11/16". The sheet dimensions are ~ 9 1/16" x 7 3/16". According to the noted Rembrandt scholar G. W. Nowell-Usticke, this is a rather uncommon portrait and highly desirable. The original copper plate for this Rembrandt etching is not in existence.
