Description: Rare U.S. Springfield Model 1915 Experimental Bolo Bayonet. Developed in the early 20th century, the 1915 Bolo Bayonet was one of the U.S. Army's attempts at a hybrid weapon that could reduce the load an individual soldier had to carry into the field. Intended for use in jungle environments, the bolo could serve as both a bayonet and a brush clearing tool. It is believed that only about fifty 1915 bolos remain. 21 inches overall, with a 15 3/4 inch blade dated "1916" on the left ricasso and marked "US/3897" on the right. Similar examples are illustrated in the book U.S. Military Knives, Bayonets and Machetes, Vol IV by Cole. Very good blade with just a few minor spots and light cleaning marks, no chips or cracks on the grips, the locking mechanism works fine. Please see my other knives, swords and bayonets.
