Hohenzollern History: The old " Hohenzollern ", which was still in service when Kaiser Wilhelm II came to power from 1888 to 1893, was a paddle steamer that was later given the name " Kaiseradler ". The new "Hohenzollern" was for Kaiser Wilhelm II about the same as the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam was for Frederick the Great. She was originally requested by the then State Secretary Admiral Hollmann in the Reichstag as a notification for higher command units and then finally turned out to be an Imperial Yacht. Of course, fierce discussions now ensued in the Reichstag about the financing of the state yacht. The ship was launched on June 27, 1892 in Stettin . Kaiser Wilhelm II personally gave a speech and Empress Victoria performed the baptism. The new "Hohenzollern" was always in service all year round because the ship had to be available at all times for an imperial voyage. If it was to be assumed that such a journey was not imminent, some of the officers and men were assigned to various training courses, but only in such a way that they could be recalled quickly at any time. During the Emperor's presence, which averaged two and a half months a year, service on board the "Hohenzollern" was not easy. The boat service was particularly difficult because the demands on the boats were very high. The boats had to be driven particularly impeccably, bad mooring or even a worn skirting board would have been a crime. When the Emperor was in the boat, the senior officer on watch, a lieutenant captain, was always in charge of the boat. Boats always had to be ready for the countless entourage, which naturally had many wishes. At times, apart from the boats for the Kaiser, 4 steam pinnacees at the same time were not enough to cope with the demands on boats. During the Emperor's presence, the teams of the "Hohenzollern" wore large straw hats instead of the usual blue or white caps. Although the straw hat was something unusual in the Imperial Navy , the enlisted men were quite proud of their conspicuous headgear. Straw hats were not worn on land, only on board and in the boats. The parade boat when the emperor as ruler made an official visit was the standard boat. It was a dark blue rowing barge with a gilded rim. If the emperor did not sail as an emperor but as an admiral, the boat did not carry the imperial standard in the bow, but a broad pennant. The greatest voyage that the Hohenzollern made, but without the Kaiser, was the voyage to New York in 1902. Since the ship was not built for such a long distance in terms of coal reserves, all available loads had to be filled with coal. Nevertheless, the trip could not be made on the usual express steamer course, but as intermediate stations Gibraltar, the Canary Islands, St. Thomas and on the return trip Bermuda and the Azores were called at. His brother, Prince Heinrich, traveled to America as the Emperor's representative to be present at the launch of the Imperial sailing yacht "Meteor". Admiral von Tirpitz accompanied him and the "Hohenzollern" was to be docked in New York as a barge. Just as the emperor liked to visit foreign rulers by water with the Hohenzollern and some escort ships, so the return visits were returned accordingly. The King of England and the Tsar of Russia always made their visits accompanied by some particularly representative warships. On such occasions there were always large naval parades and other military demonstrations. The naval parade in 1901 before the tsar and the Russian grand dukes on the roadstead of Danzig should be mentioned here . SMS Hohenzollern was the imperial state yacht and was always dressed as a warship and dispatch boat. From 1900 to 1914 it was the despatch boat SMS Sleipner.
