Description: George William Sheldon was an American Academic, graduate of Princeton, who served in the Civil War caring for the sick and wounded of Grant's army. After studying at the British Museum in 1875, he became an art reviewer and critic. He then began a career as an art historian with this work being the culmination of his years of knowledge. This was a significant work and is created with great care and embellishment in its quality and beauty. Its hardbound leather cover is embossed and gilt tooled. The 162 pages are gilt edged. There are 175 illustrations reproduced in Paris on copper plates by the Goupil photogravure and typogravure methods. The flyleaves are very elaborately decorated with blue and gold patterns. Many, many artists are represented and remarked. The book is HUGE. It is 17" tall, 14" wide and 3" deep and weighs nearly 9 pounds. Don't think that media mail would be appropriate for this tome.
