Description: Listed for auction is a unique collectable [remnant] originally recovered by Admiral Richard Byrd during his 2nd Antarctic Expedition of 1933-1934. Richard E. Byrd [1888 1957] was an American naval officer, pioneering aviator, polar explorer and organizer of polar logistics. Byrd is also believed to be the first person to reach both the North and South Poles and was a recipient of the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. The remnant is a piece of insulation taken from Byrd's meteorology station at the foot of the Transantarctic Mountains referred to as BAE II. The base was located 123 miles south of their main base Little America and he planned to spend six months alone conducting experiments. The remnant measures 1.25 x 2.00 inches and is signed by him ''R.E. Byrd'' in black ink. The remnant is affixed to a pre-printed letter dated Boston, Mass May 10, 1936. The admiral thanks those who made the expedition possible then adds the following, ''attached to this sheet is an autographed piece of insulation from the wall of the advanced meteorological Base the southernmost inhabitation ever occupied by man. My gratitude and friendship. Richard e. Byrd Commander B.A.E. II''. The page measures 8.50 x 10.75 inches, with toning/rippling to the page otherwise in very good condition.
