Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) RICHMOND, YORKSHIRE. This Yorkshire town is remarkable for beauty of situation and the interest of its remains. The view well shows the steep slope to the river Swale—precipitous in places—on and above which it is built; the bridge, connecting the town with the railway station; and the most conspicuous feature of the whole, the fine castle with its bold keep. This castle was the origin of the town which grew round it, and was founded about 1070, the keep being built before 1170. The castle is swept on three sides by the river, and, unlike so many others of similar date, is in good preservation, being still used as a store for the militia. Local legend depicts King Arthur and his knights as slumbering beneath this ancient pile. The next most conspicuous object in the town is the ruined tower of the old Grey Friars' monastery.
