Artist Biography Rodolfo Marmaioli "Marma" ( Florence , 2 August 1923 – Florence , 24 June 1998 ) was an Italian painter and illustrator He was born in 1923 in the Santa Croce neighborhood of Florence, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Ugo Capocchini , graduating in 1948. At the same time he attended the studio of Emanuele Cavalli . Marisa was born in Florence in 1954 , the only and beloved daughter of Rodolfo Marma and Geraldine Cortese. From 1956 to 1958 he lived and worked in New York , where he also later returned. Of importance is his correspondence from the years in which he was in America, from which emerges his love and absence for his native city, and the letters exchanged with his friends Vasco Pratolini , Primo Conti and the his young daughter. In the "generous land of America" they dedicated a day to him in 1965, "Marma's Day", while in the years between 1967 and 1972 he concentrated on exhibiting in Florence. Marma was also a reader and illustrator of books, including The Garden of the Knight by Mario Mattolini (ed. Mori, Florence, 1963) and When Florence Was Capital by Marcello Vannucci (ed. Bonechi, 1975). His works can be found in public and private collections in Europe and the United States, including the White House in Washington and the San Antonio Museum in Texas . In Florence, paintings by him are present in the Gallery of Modern Art of Palazzo Pitti and in the Museum of the Oblate complex . He died in Florence on 24 June 1998. He is buried in the Porte Sante Cemetery in Florence.
