Description: Postumus | AR Antoninianus Reference: RIC V.1 59 Date: 260-269 CE Obverse: IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG; bust, radiate, draped, right Reverse: FIDES MILITVM: Fides, draped, standing left, holding two military standards Mint: Lugdunum (Lyon) Size: 22.0 mm Weight: 4.00 grams This coin is a very nice example of the higher fineness and better quality antoninianii (realtive to the coinage of Gallienus) produced during the reign of the first Romano-Gallic emperor, Postumus. The year 260 CE was a very, very bad year for the Roman Empire. As evidenced by the official coinage of the "true" emperor Gallienus (see bargain bin offerings for sale here), the monetary situation reflected the political situation. In the East, Persia was running rampant , only to be checked by the increasingly dangerous influence of Septimius Odaenathus, the client king of Palmyra. In the West, Britain, Gaul and temporarily Hispania all suceeded from the Empire to form a "Gallic Empire" under the rule of one of Gallienus' competent generals, Postumus. I've often wondered if the higher relative quality of Postumus' coinage is linked to the rapid decline of the quality of Gallienus' coinage c. 260 CE. Surely, Gallienus was had more fires to put out; but by the third century Britain had become a very important source of lead, and thus silver. By suddenly cutting off Gallienus from that supply, and keeping it for his own coinage; Postumus could have affected both these observations. Of course, the elimination of British silver would be compounded by the disturbances in the East, a traditional source of wealth and precious metal.
