Description: Rybakov is from Kholui and usually does intricately designed boxes with multiple people and scenes from a story. We believe this one may be based on an epic about Churilo Plenkovich and Duke Stepanovich. There are lots of figures and complex details on this gorgeous box. It is decorated with lots of beads of gold. It is also signed and has the tradition red interior. There is one small mark on the bottom of the box, but other than that it is in beautiful condition. This box is 6 inches x 5 inches x 1 1/8 inch tall. Bin# 95-0003 *Please keep in mind any translations on these lacquer boxes are rough as none of us are fluent in Russian. These boxes are paper mâché NOT wood like many seem to think. They are also usually one of a kind. From our research we’ve found these boxes usually take each artist at least a year to finish and they paint with brushes that normally only contain 1-2 hairs of various creatures. There are also only four villages in Russia that are known for these exquisite boxes: Palekh, Fedoskino (the oldest one to begin lacquer painting), Mstera, & Kholui.
