Description: Amazing book here. This is the 8vo. first edition of the 1894 "The Fables of Aesop, Selected, Told Anew and Their History Traced By Joseph Jacobs" with Richard Heighway's classic illustrations, published by Macmillan. This copy rebound in a luxury fine binding of smooth maroon calf leather by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with ruled gilt to covers and the most wonderful gilt pictorial depictions of animals from the fables on spine between raised bands. All edges richly covered in bright gilt. Inside, we have gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers. Just as impressive as the binding is how pristine the pages inside are- they are BRIGHT, and I have attached several photos to show how incredibly clean and clear they are. There is a penciled in date to one page- Dec. 1920. The only foxing I see are a couple of bits to the tissue paper covering the frontispiece. Condition- as mentioned, the interior is flawless, other than foxing to the tissue paper separating the frontispiece and title page. The spine, which is the star of the decorative show, is perfect. The front cover has a couple tiny areas of wear and one area where it looks like a piece of tape was affixed at one point (see photos) but remains rich and radiant. A wonderful copy of an important first edition, in collectable condition. A treasure both to thumb through (Heighway's illustrations are quite charming) and to display on the shelf.
