Description: KINGS of SCYTHIA. Charaspes. Circa 2nd century BC. Æ 24mm (9.54 gm). Jugate heads of the Dioskouroi right / Eagle standing right on thunderbolt; ME monogram below. Alram 9; SNG BM Black Sea 350. Good VF, dark green patina with turquoise highlights. Rare this nice. Having checked many coin archives I have seen only 5 other examples of this coin. This being the best and the most attractive. The coin was first purchased from CNG in 2001 and changed owners couple of times. WIKIPEDIA: Charaspes was a Scythian king ruling in the Black Sea region. He was initially thought to be the King of Sophene c. 230 BC, attested only by a single coin currently kept in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. However, there is controversy whether or not this king is actually an Armenian king: he is not mentioned in the inscriptions on Mount Nemrut which list the ancestors of Antiochus I Theos, and from other coin finds it appears that Charaspes was the name of a Scyhian king in the western Black Sea region. It is quite possible that he is not an Armenian king, but rather a numismatic error. Will combine shipping.Shipped USPS with tracking.
